What is OWSA? The Old West Shootist Association was started in 1985 by Dorothy and Bill Hahn (Dutch Annie and Moss E. Horn) with some help from fellow cowboy shooters like Bill Meadors (Crapshooter) that wanted to have an annual "family oriented" cowboy shoot. The first annual shoot was held in California with 35 registered shooters. The event has now grown into 32 stages being shot (8 per day) for 4 days, with Team Shoot, Territorial Shoot & Master Gunfighter being held on the 5th and final day. Other side matches and Trailwalk are held after daily shooting earlier in the week.
OWSA is held at the beautiful NRA Whittington Center just outside of Raton, New Mexico every June. Besides the great Cowboy Shooters that you will have the pleasure of shooting with, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Whittington Center and the wildlife that roam the hills and prairies. And for your added pleasure, the Whittington Center will host a Cowboy 5-Stand, Cowboy Clays, and a Cowboy Silhouette Match on the Sunday before OWSA for those cowboys that can't seem to get enough shooting. Don't forget that while you are here, the Whittington Center has many other ranges available on their 32,000 acre spread.
OWSA has been designed for family enjoyment. Our stages have all been constructed by Bill Hahn, and you won't believe how unique they are. OWSA takes full advantage of the mountains, canyons, and bays at the Whittington Center. You won't get this kind of shooting anywhere else in the world. Our targets are farther away and smaller than you might be used to, but this match is designed for accuracy and NOT "speed", thus we access 10 second penalties for targets missed, but we don't get into a lot of procedurals. Fun and Accuracy is the name of our game.
OWSA is a great opportunity to actually shoot in a "cowboy environment of the True Old West". Our categories follow the basic CAS with a few exceptions. If you shoot a '97 shotgun, you will be entered in the Modern Category. An average stage will consist of 8 Rifle, 5 - 10 Pistol, and 2 - 4 Shotgun. With shooting 8 stages per day for 4 days, you will get in plenty of shooting. Because our shoot is spread out there is never a wait time before beginning your next stage and all Posse's finish by 1:00 P.M. , leaving you free time to enjoy the local establishments and area history of Raton and the surrounding area. You don't want to miss a visit to Solano's Western Wear in downtown Raton, or any of the other historic sites to see in the area.
The dates for the 2009 Shootout on the Santa Fe Trail are June 15 - 19
